Ford UK is boosting its Mondeo ECOnetic range with the introduction of a new 2.0-litre, 85kW model.
This latest model – the lowest CO2 Mondeo yet – broadens the choice of Ford models available with less than 140g/km CO2.
Ford Australia will introduce the ECOnetic concept into Australia later this year with the Fiesta and then will evaluate other ECOnetic models based on the success of the Fiesta.
Mondeo ECOnetic is offered in five-door or estate form each emitting the same 139g/km CO2 rating. Both vehicles are coupled to a six-speed transmission to create fuel economy returns of 4.33 litres per 100km (City) and 3.66 litres per 100km (Highway), giving a theoretical range of almost 1300kms.
“Running costs are driving purchase decisions, but customers do not want to compromise to achieve low ownership costs,” explains Mondeo brand manager, Jon Gunn-Smith. “More people than ever are recognising that ECOnetic delivers the right balance for them – and more Mondeo customers have opted for ECOnetic in the first five months of 2009, than in the whole of 2008.”
Other emission-reducing features include low-rolling resistance tyres and an optimum gearchange indicator, plus aerodynamics-enhancing sports suspension, air deflectors and a rear spoiler.
“We are launching the ECOnetic brand in Australia later this year with the Fiesta ECOnetic,” Ford Australia Communication Manager Sinead McAlary told CarAdvice today. “We believe this is the best vehicle to launch the technology and the brand here as it will be the most fuel efficient vehicle in Australia.”
She said that Ford was interested in potentially introducing other ECOnetic derivatives (including Mondeo) into the market in the future but this would be determined after evaluation of the success of Fiesta ECOnetic.
